TPO vs PVC

TPO and PVC are both thermoplastic single-ply membranes with seams welded by hot air, so they install much the same way. The difference is the chemistry: PVC is made flexible with plasticizers, and manufacturers document its resistance to grease, oils and many chemicals.

Which to choose

Choose TPO if

  • Grease and chemicals don't reach the roof. That is the case where Elevate says PVC may be the better choice.
  • You'd rather not manage plasticizers: PVC's flexibility depends on them staying in the sheet, and asphalt and polystyrene draw them out.
  • The building stays occupied: self-adhered TPO cuts odor and VOCs during installation.

Choose PVC if

  • Kitchen exhaust, oils or fuels reach the roof: PVC resists animal fats, grease, oils and fuels.
  • You want the most reflective sheet when new: white PVC lists 86 to 87% reflectance.
  • You want fewer welds made on the roof: Duro-Last welds up to 85% of the seams in its factory.
